£50,000 INCREASE IN PRIZE MONEY FOR BDO TELEVISED MAJORS

There will be an additional £50,000 in prize money available to BDO and WDF players in the space of three months from November 2007 to January 2008.

This follows recent announcements that prize money for the Winmau World Masters and the Lakeside World Professional – both staged and promoted by the British Darts Organisation and televised by BBC Sport - has been substantially increased.

The 2007 Winmau World Masters (November 16th to 18th) has increased prize money of £30,000 - doubling the 2006 figure and making it the richest two-day tournament on British terrestrial television, with a total prize fund of £60,000.

The 2008 Lakeside World Professional (January 5th to 13th, 2008) has increased prize money by £20,000 to a record-breaking prize fund of £310,000.

“This is great news for BDO and WDF darts, and reflects the wonderful relationships we enjoy with our respective sponsors”, says Olly Croft of the BDO.

“Ian Flack, Sales & Marketing Director of Winmau, has introduced JJB Sports, the national sports retail chain, as associate sponsors for this year’s World Masters.  This has resulted in an immediate 100% increase in prize money, and a cheque of £25,000 for the 2007 Men’s World Masters Champion.

“Similarly, Bob Potter of Lakeside has once again confirmed his commitment to the Lakeside World Professional by increasing prize money by a further £20,000, with £85,000 going to the 2008 Men’s World Pro Champion.

“Since Lakeside became the main title sponsor in 2004, the winning cheque for the Men’s World Pro Champion has gone up by 70%, and now means that any player completing a double victory in the BDO’s two televised majors will win a total of £110,000 in the space of three months!

“The BDO greatly appreciates the ongoing support from both Lakeside and Winmau, and on behalf of our players and officials, I would like to thank Bob and Ian for their generous sponsorships”.

The 2007 Winmau World Masters, in association with JJB Sports, will be played at Leisure World, Bridlington from November 16th to 18th, and televised live by BBC Sport over the weekend of November 16th and 17th.

The 2008 Lakeside World Professional will be televised by BBC TV, SBS-6 and Eurosport for nine consecutive days from January 5th to 13th, 2008.

TICKET TOUTS WON’T HIT A BULLSEYE AT LAKESIDE

Tickets for the 2008 Lakeside World Professional Darts Championships are in such great demand that they are already being offered by ticket touts and on websites at inflated prices.

But those doing so are being clearly warned that such tickets will not gain entry to ‘the home of world darts’ next January.

Everyone buying tickets for the BBC televised World Championships are asked to sign an undertaking that if tickets are sold on to a third-party at more than face value, or if they are offered on auction sites at inflated prices, they will be invalidated by Lakeside and no refunds given.

Action has already been taken against individuals selling tickets in this way.

“Tickets for all 9 days of the Championships are in great demand and they are security coded so that we can track them easily”, says Austin Brown of Lakeside. “2008 will be our 23rd year of staging the greatest Championships in world darts, and these measures are in place to stamp out any profiteering that might prevent genuine darts fans from obtaining tickets at the correct price”.

The 2008 Lakeside World Professional Darts Championships will be staged and promoted by the British Darts Organisation at Lakeside Country Club, and televised by BBC TV Sport, from January 5th to 13th, 2008.

ANDY FORDHAM RETURNS TO WORLD DARTS

The British Darts Organisation is delighted to announce that ANDY FORDHAM, the 2004 BDO World Professional Darts Champion and one of the biggest and most popular characters in darts, is to return to the world stage later this year.

The player known universally as ‘The Viking’ , has accepted an invitation to compete in the Winmau World Masters this November, as well as the BDO ranked Zuiderduin Masters in Egmond aan Zee, Holland in December.

“This is wonderful news for the sport of darts, because Andy is probably the most respected and recognised player in the world”, says Olly Croft of the BDO. “He and wife Jenny, together with their  children Raymond and Emily, are an integral part of the BDO family and it is great to have him back on the oche where he belongs”.

The hugely popular player was taken ill at Lakeside Country Club in January and following hospitalisation for chest and liver problems, and it was feared by some that he might never play competitive darts again.

However, with the strong support of his family, friends and fellow players, Andy (now down to 21 stone in weight) has been making steady progress towards a return to good health, and after months of not picking up a dart, he has been practising privately.

The result is that when he returned to competitive darts last week in the Turunc Open in Turkey, he reached the Semi-Finals.

“Although I was a little nervous to begin with, the confidence slowly came back, and I was pleased and surprised with my game and the way I handled it”, says Andy.

“This was my first competitive darts for eight long months and although there’s still a way to go, I now have a firm target to aim for and goals to achieve.”

The 2007 Winmau World Masters, in association with JJB Sports, is the final tournament in the 2007 BDO Grand Slam title and will be played at Leisure World, Bridlington from November 16th to 18th.  The weekend finals of the Men’s Masters will be televised by BBC TV Sport on November 17th & 18th and the £60,000 prize money makes it the richest 2-day televised tournament in World Darts.

The Zuiderduin Masters will be played in Holland from December 7th to 9th.

Andy was crowned Winmau World Masters Men’s Champion in 1999 and is sponsored by the Winmau Dartboard Company.

“We are delighted that Andy is making his return to major darts at this year’s Winmau World Masters”, says Ian Flack, Sales & Marketing Director of the Winmau Dartboard Company. “We have always given him our total support and he is a great ambassador for the worldwide sport of darts.

“Everyone at Winmau joins with Andy’s family, the BDO, and his fellow players, in welcoming him back to the world stage where he belongs”.

After a long struggle against ill health Andy "The Viking" Fordham has made a re-appearance on the oche. Andy chose to enter the Turunc Open in Turkey which enabled him to return to darts without any of the distractions he would have encountered in a British or mainland European event. Andy will be delighted with his performance, reaching the Semi-Final where he lost to the eventual winner, Welsh Captain Martin Phillips. The losing finalist was Darryl Fitton.
