Number one seed Mark McGeeney secured his place in round two with a convincing 3-1 victory over Dutch thrower Derk Telnekes. After a shaky opening couple of sets, ‘The Gladiator’ found his groove on the Lakeside stage as he looks to avenge last years final defeat to Glen Durrant.

In the opening leg of the match, Derk Telnekes took out a spectacular 145 checkout, immediately putting McGeeney on the back foot. But McGeeney would turn it around to take the first set. Telnekes’ excellent form would continue with a 119 checkout in set two, levelling the match.

The maximum’s would rain in the third set of the match as both players found their scoring form. But it would again be the Stockport thrower who took the set after creating a significant cushion over the Dutchman.

McGeeney would tie up the opening match of the tournament on double two as he cruised to a simple victory in the final set of the match. Telnekes allowing McGeeney the time and space to put to final touches to an excellent opening match at the BDO World Professional Darts Championships.
