Scott Waites will face Michael Unterbuchner in Saturday’s semi-finals after he defeated Conan Whitehead in what was a vintage performance from the two-time champion. ‘The Barbarian’ conquered number one seed Mark McGeeney in the previous round but could not reproduce his sensational performance against the consistency of Waites.
Waites would average over a ton in a clinical opening set, before Whitehead levelled proceedings with a solid second set. An exceptional 154 checkout gave the Kent based star the edge as he moved ahead for the first time.
‘Scotty-2-Hotty’ would return after the commercial break and reel off three consecutive sets to put Whitehead in all sorts of trouble. The 41-year-old would average 110 in the set that gave him a 4-2 cushion, putting a semi-final place just one set away. As the finish-line neared Whitehead would throw the kitchen sink at Waites in an attempt to fight back. A 102 rattled the former champion but eventually his experience would show.
A scintillating 142 finish would end ‘The Barbarian’s’ fightback as Waites closed out the final to set up a meeting with Michael Unterbuchner in tomorrow’s semi-final.
