Neil Duff produced one of the shocks of the round as he defeated number four seed Dave Parletti in the opening match of the 2019 BDO one80 L-style World Masters. After a terrific day of qualifying in Grays on Wednesday, Parletti took the first set of the match but was quickly pegged back by 'The Duff Man'.
As the match went to a deciding set, Surrey thrower Parletti would miss match darts at double 18, giving Duff the chance to steal in and take a huge scalp at the Circus Tavern.
There was another huge shock in the final game of the session as Humberside’s Craig Owens defeated World Number two, Richard Veenstra. ‘Flyers’ missed two match darts at tops in set four as Owens took us into a final deciding set. The debutant would feel no nerves as eh closed out a landmark victory in one of the sports iconic venues.
Runner-up of the 2016 BDO World Championship Jeff Smith would have a perfect start to his campaign on the TV stage as he defeated Ryan Hogarth in double quick time. There was also a straight sets victory for Graham Usher as he defeated Norway's Stig Jarle Knudsen in another dominant first round display.
Carl Hamilton put arguably put in the performance of the session as he defeated Slovenia’s Benjamin Pratnemer with a 94 average. The Darlington born thrower competed at the BDO World Trophy back in August, and will be looking to use that experience to put in a better run this weekend in Purfleet.
Scotland’s Gary Stone also progressed to the last 16 as he cruised past John Mann in the session’s penultimate encounter. Stone was averaging in excess of 96 as he took a two set lead before Mann pegged him back. The experience of former WDF World Cup winner Stone told as he closed out the opening set to confirm his place in tomorrow’s last 16 field.
Ciaran Teehan and Simon Stainton, who wont he double in Cyrus last weekend also produced excellent displays to see themsleves through, with Teehan defeating the conqueror of Jim Williams, David Copley.
