Number one seed Lorraine Winstanley progressed to the semi-finals with a straight sets victory over ten-time champion Trina Gulliver MBE. The former World Trophy winner hadn’t made the semi-final stage of the World Championships since 2012, but she will now return on Friday for one of the biggest matches of her career.
Three breaks in the first three legs set the tone for a topsy-turvy contest, with Winstanley eventually holding in the fourth leg of the match as she took the opening set. She would be run all the way in the second set of the match. Gulliver smashing in a second 180 of the match, but a 124 checkout stealing the leg for Winstanley. ‘The Golden Girl’ would resurrect her chances from 2-0 down, making it 2-2, but ultimately Winstanley would hold her nerve, nailing to outer ring to take the match in just two sets.
