Over 1000 players headed to Wunderland in Kalkar to participate in the 31st German Open.
Saturday’s main event saw Belgium’s Mario Vandenbogaerde take the Men’s event with a 6-5 win over double-West Fries champion Martijn Kleermaker. Vandenbogaerde moved into a 3-1 lead in the final before, in a match which could have gone either way, the scores levelled at 5-5. With a 14-dart last leg, Vandenbogaerde took the German Open title and his second BDO ranked tournament.
Vandenbogaerde faced Lincolnshire and England sharp-shooter Leighton Bennett in the semi-finals, beating the 13-year-old 5-3 to reach the final, whilst Kleermaker had a 5-3 win over Germany’s Florian Hempel.
The ladies event saw Aileen de Graaf retain her 2018 title with a narrow 5-4 victory over England’s Fallon Sherrock in the second final to go the distance. The win marks de Graaf’s eight title this season.
De Graaf’s final place came at the expense of Russia’s Anastasia Dobromyslova, who she defeated 4-2 in the semi-finals, whilst Sherrock beat Lisa Ashton 4-1 in the second semi-final, in her first tournament appearance since the Isle of Man in March.
