The Lithuanian and Vilnius Opens this weekend saw maiden 2019 wins for Martin Barrett, Jeffrey Sparidaans and Kirsi Viinikainen, who took both ladies’ singles events.
Finland’s Viinikainen took Saturday’s Lithuanian Open with a 5-2 win over Sweden’s Helene Sundelin in the final, following her earlier win 4-2 over the number one seed Andreea Brad in the semi-final. Sundelin’s place in the final came after she defeated Denmark’s Fie Nielsen by the same 4-2 scoreline in the second semi-final.
It was England’s Martin Barrett who claimed his first BDO title of 2019 as he beat Iceland Open Champion Dennis Watt in the semi-final to claim a place against Holland’s Alexander Merkx in the Lithuanian Open final. Merkx had beaten Poland’s Sebastien Steyer in the semi-finals by 5 legs to 3. Barrett went on to take the final 6-3 over Merkx.
Sunday’s Vilnius Open saw Kirsi Viinikainen back in the final, this time to face fellow Finnish player Kaisu Rekinen, with Viinikainen taking her second title of the weekend with a 5-1 win. Viinikainen had earlier edged out Latvia’s Kristine Mickus 4-3, whilst Rekinen faced the Netherland’s Marjolein Noijens, winning 4-2.
Jeffrey Sparidaans had a confident run in the Men’s Vilnius Open to take his first title of 2019 with a 5-1 win over fellow Dutch player Ad van Haaren. Van Haaren had earlier taken out number one seed John Scott, before meeting Latvia’s Janis Kupsis in the semi-final, winning through 5-2. Sparidaans spot in the final came at the expense of the Ukraine’s Artem Usyk, winning 5-3.
The results now see just three points separating three of the weekends competitors, with John Scott, Sebastian Steyer and Jeffrey Sparidaans occupying positions 36-38 on the rolling table. Viinikainen’s wins sees her gain and extra 28 points to move in 54th place on the BDO rolling table.
