THURSDAY saw the conclusion of the 31st Malta International Darts Open. The three-day event saw over 300 players take part in the Men’s, Ladies and Disability singles competitions.
The final of the Men’s singles saw 2019 BDO Lakeside World Professional debutant Andy Hamilton face the 3-times Malta Open Champion, Greece’s John Michael. Michael claimed his fourth title with a 6-3 win over ‘The Hammer’. Hamilton beat Surrey’s Dave Parletti 5-3 in the semi-finals, whilst Michael had a close battle with ‘Silverback’ Tony O’Shea, winning 5-4.
In the ladies’ singles competition, England’s Deta Hedman retained her title, beating Julie Thompson 4-0 in the final. Thompson had earlier beaten Wales’s Nikki Goldsmith 4-2 in the semi-finals and Hedman faced former England teammate Sarah Chick in a match that went the distance, Hedman just edging the win 4-3.
This year also saw the introduction of the inaugural disability event, which went to Tony “the tiger” Pass as he defeated Miklos Joszef of Hungary 3-2 in the final.
