January 06, 2019

A look forward at day two's matches from the Lakeside Country Club Frimley Green.

Afternoon session

13:00 - Scott Waites Vs Jeffrey van Egdom

Yorkshireman Scott Waites will be gunning for a third BDO World Professional Darts Championship as he looks to add to his collection of titles from 2013 and 2016. Currently sitting ninth in the BDO rolling ranking tables, ‘Scotty-2-Hotty’ will certainly be a threat to the 40 player field. Having competed on the BDO circuit throughout 2018 his Belgian opponent holds the relevant experience to challenge the two-time former champion. But who will run out winner in Sunday’s opening match?

14:15 – Brian Lokken vs Krzysztof Kciuk

In the first preliminary battle of the afternoon, Denmark’s Brian Lokken takes on Krzysztof Kciuk of Poland, where both players will be making their Lakeside debuts. ‘The Great Dane’ made the final four of both the Icelandic and Vilnius Open in 2018 and is used to making the latter stages of ranking events in the Nordic region. A win over the relatively inexperienced Kcuik would set up a tie with 11th seed Dave Parletti in the first round.

15:30 – Deta Hedman vs Maria O’Brien

Deta Hedman returns to have another attempt at the BDO Women’s World Championship having been runner-up in three previous years. Hedman holds an untouchable record over O’Brien in major competition over the past three years, with four of those meetings coming at the quarter-final stage. Although, England star O’Brien has been gaining steam of late and could cause ‘The Heart of Darts’ some problems this time around. If she produces the darts that landed her a place at the sport’s most prestigious women’s event we could be in for a shock.

16:00 – Richard Veenstra Vs Nigel Heydon

Number eight seed Richard Veenstra returns to the Lakeside stage for the fourth successive year on Sunday; this time facing the winner of a preliminary match between Jim Widmayer and Nigel Heydon. ‘Flyers’ was a Scottish Open winner in 2018, as well making the final of the Zuiderduin Masters just weeks before the BDO World Professional Darts Championships. He will be hoping to take this form into 2019, and better his 2016 performance where he reached the semi-final stage.

Evening session

19:00 Roger Janssen Vs Wouter Vaes

Having entered at the preliminary round in 2017; two years on, Roger Janssen returns to Frimley Green for another shot at the sports’ greatest prize. Janssen lost to Mark McGrath two years ago and will have to defeat Dutchman Wouter Vaes to make round one in this year’s tournament. Vaes has enjoyed a breakthrough year in 2018, winning the Antwerp Open, as well as appearing in the four major events on the calendar. This could well go all the way.

20:15 – Fallon Sherrock Vs Corrine Hammond

Runner-up from 2015 Fallon Sherrock, will begin her tournament on Sunday against Australia’s Corrine Hammond. Having enjoyed a BDO World Trophy victory in 2018, producing two 90 plus averages in the process, she will enter the match as favourite. After a sensational 2017 where Hammond defeated Sherrock on two occasions, a slight drop in form has meant the Aussie is unseeded for the tournament. Despite this, the 2017 World Championship and World Masters runner-up will be confident of progressing to another final in 2019.

20:45 – Mark McGrath Vs Adam Smith-Neale

New Zealand’s Mark McGrath returns for another year, this time facing Winmau World Master Adam Smith-Neale in his opening game. The latter has returned from a broken leg to make his Lakeside debut. He defeated some of the BDO’s best in Jim Williams, Mark McGeeney and Glen Durrant on route to his World Masters victory, and will have to do so again if he wants to take home the BDO’s biggest prize. The Nuneaton thrower will be determined to make it count against the 2018 Auckland Open champion in a tasty looking preliminary contest.

22:00 - Wayne Warren Vs Mark Layton

In a battle of two of Wales’ finest throwers, 2018 quarter-finalist Wayne Warren takes on fellow countryman Mark Layton in the opening round. Current Welsh captain Layton has relished his career resurgence in 2018 making the final of the Wolverhampton Open in July, but faces a tough opponent in the experienced Warren. Former BDO Gold Cup champion Warren made the final eight of three major events in 2018, so enters the tournament full of a confidence. A win over Layton could set up a sensational looking tie with Germany’s Michael Unterbuchner.
