Nigel Heydon squeezed through to the second round of the Lakeside World Professional Darts Championship 2019 with a hard-fought win over the USA’s Jim Widmayer on Saturday afternoon. The American nailed a first 180 of the match in the opening leg, and he would take that set in a deciding leg against ‘The Undertaker’.

It was plain sailing for ‘Captain America’ in set two as he whitewashed the Lakeside debutant to double his advantage. A 72 checkout in the third leg was enough to see Widmayer extend the lead going into the commercial break.

Three legs on the spin were enough to see Heydon half the deficit as the cracks began to show in Widmayer’s performance. The momentum would shift in Heydon’s favour as he cruised to the forth set of the match, reproducing his SuperLeague form from earlier in the year, to get himself back in the contest.

The sensational turn around was completed as the England thrower reeled off nine consecutive legs to send Widmayer packing set up a tie with Richard Veenstra in the first round.
