Justin Thompson defeated fellow Australian Mal Cuming as he romped to an impressive 3-0 victory on just his second appearance on the Lakeside stage. ‘Thommo’ lost out to Darryl Fitton at last year’s World Championship, but after defeating Cuming, will be hoping for a better run in this year’s tournament.
It appeared that Thompson acclimatized to the environment the better of the two as he secured a 3-0 win in the opening set of the match. The 49-year-old continued to be lethal on tops as Cuming failed to gain any traction in what would rank as the biggest game of his life.
There was a small revival from ‘The Bull’ as he took two legs off the experienced Thompson, but his Lakeside journey would end for the year as, Justin Thompson sailed through.
Thompson will have expected more from his Victoria state darts team-mate, but will take confidence from his 3-0 victory as he takes on Michael Unterbuchner in the first round.
