Two-time former champion Scott Waites eased past Jeffrey van Egdom in convincing fashion with a 3-1 set victory over the Belgian debutant. ‘Scotty 2 Hotty’ took the opening set of the match 3-0, immediately putting his inexperienced opponent on the back foot. Waites’ excellent form would continue in the second set, kicking off with a spectacular 88 checkout. But the Belgian would show fantastic resilience to fight back and take the set, levelling the game at 1-1.
The fightback would continue as Van Egdom took the first leg of the third set. But Waites would regain the composure that took him to two previous world titles, as he closed out the set 3-1. Van Egdom was unable to get out of first gear in the fourth set, as Waites’ heavy hitting made life tough for the youngster. After seeing out an impressive victory on his return to the Lakeside stage, Waites it confident going into the second round.
“In practice my scoring hasn’t been great, but my doubles have been fantastic, and obviously it’s been vice versa on the stage this afternoon. Hopefully they can both come together we’ll have a really good game of darts”.
