Canada’s Jeff Smith and the USA’s Cali West were both victorious at the Port City Open this weekend.
Smith beat 2018 runner-up Joseph Chaney 4-3 in the final to take his second BDO tournament of the season. Chaney had earlier put a stop to Leonard Gates impressive run in the semi-finals, edging him out 4-3 despite Gates’s 97.4 average sitting almost eight points above Chaney’s 89.7. Gates had registered the highest tournament average of 106.1 in the quarters against Adam Stella. Smith’s semi-final victory was over Aaron Jalbert and he beat US player Avery Barry 4-2 in the quarter finals.
West’s victory came at the expense of Canada’s Joanne Luke. Luke, a 2018 Port City Open semi-finalist went one stage better this year but couldn’t quite cross the line as West took the final 4-3. West had a comfortable 4-1 win over Mellissa Jalbert in the semi’s, whilst Luke narrowly beat Pam Briggs 4-3 in their semi-final match.
