RICHARD Veenstra and Lorraine Winstanley became IOM Classic Champions this weekend at the Villa Marina, Douglas.
Now in it’s 34th year, the IOM Festival of Darts, organised and hosted by England Darts, attracted over 500 players to its shores.
Assured wins over Kyle McKinstry 4-1 and Adam Smith-Neale 4-0 in the final stages of the tournament saw ‘Flyers’ confirm his place in the final against fellow Dutchman Willem Mandigers.
Mandigers route to the final saw him beat Scottish International’s Gary Stone 4-1, who had earlier beaten the number one seed Wesley Harms, and Jim McEwan narrowly by 4 legs to 3.
Veenstra’s dominance continued into Sunday’s final against Mandigers, dropping just one leg to win 4-1, with a 100 checkout in the last leg, opting for the 20, tops, tops route.
The win saw the Dutch ace move above Wesley Harms and take the number one spot in the BDO rolling table.
Winstanley’s IOM Classic victory came at the expense of England teammate Fallon Sherrock. Sherrock was slow to start and Winstanley capitalised, breaking the Buckinghamshire’s player early. Winstanley held throw throughout to win 4-2.
Winstanley faced Danielle and Lisa Ashton in the quarter and semi-final stages respectively, winning 4-2 and 4-3 over the Lancashire-based duo.
Sherrock’s had a similarly difficult run against England and Devon’s Maria O’Brien and number three seed Aileen de Graaf.
