TWO-TIMES World Champion Scott Waites and Surrey’s Laura Turner both took their first titles of the 2018/2019 season by winning the IOM’s flagship tournament, the IOM Open at the Villa Marina, Douglas.

Waites faced 2015 World Professional Champion Scott Mitchell in the first semi-final, edging the England Captain out 5-4. He would face the IOM Classic winner Richard Veenstra in the final as Flyers beat fellow Dutchman Martijn Kleermaker 5-1 to make his second final of the weekend.

Waites had earlier victories over Chris Landman and crowd favourite Darryl Fitton, who is back competing on the BDO tour, picking up points in his last three events. Mitchell’s last 16 win was over Brazil’s Diogo Portela, before overcoming Lakeside legend Martin Adams 4-0 in the quarter finals, who is also climbing back up the ranking table.

Waites and Veenstra last met in the second round of the 2019 Lakeside World Professional Championships, and despite the dominance Veenstra had demonstrated over the weekend, it was Waites who surged ahead to win in straight legs 5-0.

Despite the result, Veenstra’s performance over the weekend saw him move into World Number one position.

The women’s final was contested by Turner and England’s Deta Hedman; both Hedman and Turner faced tough opposition en-route to the final.

Hedman had a 4-2 last 16 win over Priscilla Steenbergen before facing the 2019 Lakeside runner-up Lorraine Winstanley, edging out the number four seed 4-2. Turner had wins over England’s Maria O’Brien and Fallon Sherrock in the Last 16 and Last 8 respectively.

Sunday’s semi-final saw Hedman take a 4-2 over the IOM Masters Champion Lisa Ashton and Laura Turner progressing through to her first A+ final over the Dutch Open runner-up Aileen de Graaf.

The final saw the first five legs all go against the throw, as missed doubles from Hedman saw Turner capitalise over the six-times IOM Champion. Turner managed to hold her throw in the sixth leg to take her first A+ title.
