Australia’s Corrine Hammond and England’s Brian Dawson were riding high at the Bulls German Masters on Sunday as they took their first titles of 2019.
Brian Dawson fought through a tough field of over 600 competitors to win his first BDO ranked title 6-4 over the number three seed Wesley Harms.
Dawson, a former BDO Gold Cup Champion, beat German Open Champion Vandenbogaerde 5-4 in the quarter finals before facing Dennie Olde Kalter, sailing past the Dutch player 5-1 to reach his first ranked final.
Harms secured his fourth final spot of 2019 with a close win over Wales’ Jim Williams 5-4, having earlier beaten the in-form Leighton Bennett 4-1 to progress into the last eight.
The Women’s event saw Hammond take her first title since the Australian Masters in 2018 with a 5-4 win over 2019 Lakeside runner-up Lorraine Winstanley. The result sees Hammond move one place up the rankings into 13th place.
Hammond’s route to the final included wins over Hungary’s Vivian Czipó 4-3, who had earlier taken Fallon Sherrock out of the tournament, followed by Kirsty Hutchinson 4-2 and then the four-times World Champion, Lisa Ashton by the same scoreline in the semi-finals.
Winstanley’s quarter-final match was against close friend and pairs partner Anastasia Dobromyslova, progressing through with a 4-0 win before despatching of Germany’s Irina Armstrong in the semi-finals in straight legs. Armstrong had earlier taken out the number two seed, Aileen de Graaf, denying the Dutch player a chance of repeating her 2018 double-victory.
