Lakeside 2018 Day 7 Session 1 Report

Scott Waites England 5 Vs 4 Andy Baetens Belgium

Scott Waites pulled off one of the great escapes in Lakeside history to reach the last four. He came back from 4-1 down to beat Andy Baetens, surviving six match darts. The Belgian missed two chances to win the match 5-2 – and spurned four more match-winning chances in the fourth leg of the deciding ninth set. Baetens was still hurting from those four misses when he started the fifth leg and Waites twisted the knife with scores of 140, 140 and 180. He went on to wrap up an 11 darter for a crucial break and then held for the match.

Trina Gulliver MBE England 0 Vs 2 Anastasia Dobromyslova Russia

Anastasia Dobromyslova reached her first final since 2013 with a 2-0 win over 10 times champion Trina Gulliver. Gulliver wired a dart at double eight for the opening set in the deciding leg and Dobromyslova capitalised for a break. The second set was more straight forward for the Ellesmere Port-based Russian. She won it 3-0 as Gulliver struggled to stay with her.

Glen Durrant England 5 Vs 4 Jim Williams Wales

Defending champion Glen Durrant rallied superbly from the brink of defeat to edge out Jim Williams over nine sets. As Scott Waites did earlier, Durrant came from 4-1 down to win.

But while Waites owed his miracle to Andy Baetens imploding, there was no such collapse from Williams. Durrant simply found another gear and outplayed him. From 4-1 down, Durrant won 12 of the next 13 legs.  He raced to the sixth set in just 38 darts, won the seventh without reply and levelled the match at 4-4 with a 116 check out. Williams had 180s in each of the opening two legs of the deciding set, but Durrant found a response and won the set 3-0 for the match.
