BRIAN WOOD 5 v SCOTT WAITES 3

White-shirted 41-year-old Brian Woods punched the air and let out a shriek of delight as he powered into the semi finals, sweeping aside third seed and debutant Scott Waites 5-3. Woods from Cumbria showed little mercy as he defied a brave comeback attempt from the 30-year-old Halifax sharpshooter in an entertaining north of England clash.

The player from the north west who hit the tournaments top average (32.17) in the opening round has been battling flu all week but showed no traces of the sniffles as he warmed to the task ahead, charging into a 3-1 interval lead.A maximum helped steer him to a fifth set 3-0 scoreline but despite a further 180and a 2-1 lead in the next the gritty Yorkshireman levelled the set on double eight and then followed up by taking 60, finished on double tops to pull the match back to 4-2. Two missed darts for double tops to level the next set saw Waites come within one set of Woods. Double 15 hit with his second dart with the throwing advantage gave Woods a eight set lead take the match to 4-3. Woods said afterwards: “I feel absolutely fantastic, I am over the moon. I was 4-1 up and lost two sets. I asked what was going on in my head but luckily
I finally came through. “I have been practising my doubles since before Christmas and it is paying
off.

“I play Simon in the next round, a player I have not played before and I am really looking forward to it. He looked awesome in his game against Ted Hankey but I am playing well myself,” said the profusely sweating Woods.
