December 19, 2018

FOLLOWING our recent delegates meeting, we are delighted to announce the BDO players and officials of 2018.

Both Essex’s John Weller and Glamorgan’s Giovanna Thomas have been recognised for their contribution to the sport in their roles as BDO officials.

John Weller has been an integral part of Essex County Darts for over thirty years, currently holding the position of General Secretary. John, along with his wife Mandy, have run the merchandising stool for the BDO since 2000, culminating in John joining the BDO board as the Merchandising Director in 2013.

Through John’s ongoing commitment to the sport and his dedication to the merchandising sector, the BDO have benefited from the sales and have been able to offer on-going financial support to the British Youth teams.

John made the decision to step down from his role within merchandising after nearly 20 years, although he remains at the helm in Essex, and we would like to thank him for all his years’ service and wish him every success in the future.

Glamorgan’s Giovanna Thomas, known by most as Gio, has worked within the BDO for several years, and is a key point of contact for any and all BDO enquiries.

Gio has worked tirelessly, especially so during the transitional period from the previous board to the newly elected board, and has been recognised for the invaluable service she has given throughout this testing time.

As Glamorgan Youth Secretary, Gio has also dedicated much time to the supporting, developing and encouraging participation at junior level within the county, actively promoting and ensuring a vibrant Glamorgan youth team.

Since his debut appearance at the Lakeside World Professional Darts Championships in January this year, Germany’s Michael Unterbuchner’s game has gone from strength to strength. An unranked outsider, he powered his way to the semi-finals, losing out on a final spot to the number one seed Mark McGeeney, and is now ranked seventh in the World.

Subsequently, Michael has won the Swiss Open and has been runner up four ranked tournaments, including the World Darts Trophy. He was also the furthest BDO player to progress in this year Grand Slam of Darts.

His quick progression and impact within the BDO system has seen him earn this year’s Men’s personality of the year.

Like Michael, Roz Bulmer has made excellent headway in her first full season on the BDO tour.

Roz has been a notable player for Norfolk County Darts for some time, but this season saw her form part of ‘Norfolk on Tour’ as she and many of her fellow county players embarked on tackling the BDO circuit.

Roz made quick progress, reaching the semi-finals of the World Dart Trophy as well as the Denmark Open. Coupled with several quarter-final placings, Roz broke into the top 14 of the world rankings, ensuring herself a place at Lakeside!

These accomplishments are especially inspiring following the challenges Roz has had to face, and is still facing, over the last few years following two separate cancer diagnoses.

We would like to congratulate all our winners and wish them all every success for 2019.

The presentation for the BDO Personalities of the Year will take place at the 2019 Lakeside World Darts Championships.

Tickets for the Lakeside World Darts Championships are still available via the Lakeside World Darts website – www.lakesideworlddarts.co.uk
