The Lakeside World Professional Darts Championship returns to the Lakeside country club as 16 of the world’s best female darts players battle it out to be crowned BDO Women’s World Champion.

Amongst the field are three former World champions, and four debutants on the Frimley Green stage. Both Karolina Podgórska and Mikuru Suzuki qualified through the play-off’s, and now take aim at a first BDO Women’s World Championship title.

Japanese qualifier Suzuki has made quite a wave in 2018, becoming dominant in her home country and making a World Masters quarter-final along the way. She faces reigning champion Lisa Ashton in a mouth-watering opening round tie at the Lakeside.

‘The Lancashire Rose’ is now a four-time champion and hasn’t lost on the Lakeside stage since 2016. In order to make it three in a row, Ashton will have to grind out a result against the in-form Suzuki, in the opening session.

Elsewhere, Podgórska faces ten-time champion Trina Gulliver MBE in round one. Her mountain of experience will provide an excellent base for another deep run in the competition, should she defeat her Polish counterpart.

The final former world champion amongst a talented field of players is three-time winner Anastasia Dobromyslova. The Russian faces debutant Laura Turner in the opening round. Turner has enjoyed a sensational year on the BDO circuit, pushing herself into the final qualification position in the BDO World Rankings. A win over the world number four Dobromyslova, could see her consolidate her place amid the world’s elite as well putting herself in the mix for a deep run in 2019.

Deta Hedman continues her search for that illustrious first world title in 2019, her campaign begins against England team-mate Maria O’Brien. Roz Bulmer and Sharon Prins will clash in the opening round, playing for the right to face either Lisa Ashton or Mikuru Suzuki in round two.

In one of the opening round’s standout ties, Lorraine Winstanley faces Casey Gallagher. Winstanley is a five-time quarter-finalist and former semi-finalist on the Lakeside stage, but after attaining the number one spot in the rankings, she will be looking to crown an excellent season with a World Championship victory.

In a repeat of last year’s first round matches, Lincolnshire Ladies Captain Paula Jacklin faces number five seed Aileen de Graaf, whilst Australia’s Corrine Hammond plays Fallon Sherrock. The 24-year-old from Milton Keynes will go into the match as favourite, but after defeating Dobromyslova and Gallagher on route to the 2017 final, Hammond will certainly fancy her chances.

You can catch all the BDO World Darts Championship action on Eurosport, Quest TV and BDO TV for the non televised territories.
