Scott Mitchell and Lisa Ashton took the 2018 Vizcaya International Open titles, with wins over Wayne Warren and Deta Hedman respectively.
Mitchell, who only recently made a return to competitions last weekend in Sweden following a six-week break, has quickly found his form. He beat Germany’s Michael Unterbuchner 5-2 in the semi-final before ousting Wales’ Warren in the final 6-1. Warren, who himself has had a good run of form this season, beat Wes Newton 5-3 in his semi-final.
In the ladies’ tournament, all four seeds progressed into the semi-finals. Ashton, seeded third, faced Dutch International, Aileen de Graaf, whilst number one seed Hedman faced 10-times World Champion, Trina Gulliver MBE. Both Ashton and Hedman were in top form and won their places in the finals with decisive 5-0 victories over their opponents. Ashton secured the title with a 6-2 win over Hedman in the final.
The pairs events were held on Friday evening, where English duo Tony O’Shea and Gary Robson beat the Spanish pairing of Jose Sousa and Fidel Corral to win the Men’s pairs 5 legs to 2. The ladies’ final was an all British affair, with Lisa Ashton and Heather Lodge beating Trina Gulliver and Paula Jacklin 4-1 in the final. Gulliver had better success in the mixed pairs with partner Dan Nicholls, where they beat Anca Zijlstra and Dean Reynolds 5-3 in the final.
